Rima Nakkash, DrPH, is an associate professor at the Health Promotion and Community Health Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences and an associate director of the Knowledge to Policy (K2P) center at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Dr. Nakkash also coordinates the AUB-Tobacco Control Research Group (AUB-TCRG) and chairs the Tobacco Free AUB Taskforce. Dr. Nakkash’s primary research interest is in tobacco control and it started early in her career as part of leading work in a community based cardiovascular disease prevention intervention in a low income neighborhood in Beirut, Lebanon. Her research focuses on intervention development, evaluation and building stakeholder capacity and advocacy to ensure and sustain knowledge translation. She is involved in a number of research projects to evaluate policies in relation to bans of smoking in public places, health warnings on tobacco products, point of sale advertising, alcohol harm reduction and others. Dr. Nakkash is an expert in community based participatory research and intervention research design and evaluation particularly with youth and disadvantaged populations. She has previously lead the process evaluation of a community based mental health promotion intervention for refugee youth and a randomized controlled trial testing the impact of a school based prevention program to control use of waterpipe in Qatar and Lebanon. More recently, she has joined the FRIENDS intervention team and is leading the implementation research component of that project.
