Dr. Hassen Al-Amin (MD, class 1990) joined AUB as a faculty in 1997 after finishing his Psychiatry residency at University of Rochester, NY and his research fellowship at National Institute of Mental Health, Maryland. He was involved in several academic activities and was the acting chair of the department between 2004-2006 during which he lead the team to initiate the inpatient Psychiatry services at AUB medical center. He also supervised several MS students for their thesis in Neuroscience at AUB.
He joined Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) in 2009 where he continued his academic pursuits in teaching, clinical work and research. He served as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs from June 2011 through December 2012 and chaired the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at WCM-Q from June 2010 through December 2012. In addition, Dr. Al-Amin served on many national committees in Qatar including the Executive Committee for the Qatar Neuroscience Institute and the Joint National Mental Health Committee in Qatar.
Dr. Al-Amin also maintained his interest in translational research and served as principal investigator on a number of international multicenter clinical trials assessing atypical antipsychotics in schizophrenia. His current research projects include the metabolic syndrome in patients on antipsychotics, the genetics of schizophrenia and the possible dopamine, glutamate, and cytokines interactions in the neuropsychiatric syndromes like chronic pain and schizophrenia. He is also involved in several projects related to the translation and cultural adaptation of clinical psychiatric scales to Arabic.
