Ministry of Education and Higher Education - Lebanon
Fadi Yarak has served as the Director General for Education in the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education since 2007. His career in public service delivery, social and economic development spans over two decades, including advisory and field-based work across the education, health, and social services sectors.
In his capacity as Director General, Mr. Yarak heads Lebanon’s policy development for the education sector, coordinating colleagues from a range of affiliated and independent agencies, as well as direct responsibility for managing the school system. He leads the Ministry’s collaboration with a range of multilateral agencies, donors and international and national implementing partners. He serves as a member of UNESCO’s national commission for Lebanon, and on the Education for All working group.
Over the past six years, Mr. Yarak has played a leading role in developing and coordinating responses in education to the Syria Crisis. To date, Lebanon’s formal schools have enrolled almost 200,000 Syrian children in addition to the regular school population. He served as a member of the taskforce to establish the Education Cannot Wait movement and fund, and takes a keen interest in the challenges of managing service delivery in the context of a protracted emergency.
In early 2017 and 2016 respectively, Mr. Yarak was awarded the Spanish Order of Civil Merit and was awarded the rank of Chevalier in the French National Order of Merit, in recognition of his contribution to the education sector.
